ENTRY 1

Hello, my name is Jesus Moreno, and I am a senior at the University of Houston main campus. I am graduating in June 2024 with a Bachelor of Science in Teaching and Learning as an EC-6 generalist. I am extremely excited to be a future educator who will touch the hearts and minds of many young children’s lives. My philosophical statement is to foster a new generation of students who will be sufficiently efficient in this digital world that we are living in.

As I stated in my video my native language is English, but I do speak, read, write and translate in Spanish proficiently. I was briefly classified as an English Language Learner (ELL) and I was placed in an English as a Second Language class (ESL) in elementary school in the Dallas area. Now, at a young age I did not know why I had been placed in an ESL class instead of a general classroom. However, according to Wright, (2019, p. 3) it states, “parents complete a home language survey when they enroll their children in school.” Therefore, since my mother checked off a box stating that we spoke Spanish and English at home that is the reason I was placed in an ESL class. Now, I say briefly because I recall being in ESL for a very short amount of time, because I tested out of ESL class and was transitioned to the general classroom.

Nonetheless, I remember having an amazing ESL teacher, Mrs. Kesterson, who was kind and inclusive. Although, I was new to the classroom I remember she treated me like I was important and tested me on a 1:1 basis several times then eventually told me that she would like speak to my mother about transitioning me to the general classrooms. I want to do the same for all my students to make them feel welcomed and important in my classroom. I want to be equipped with the best resources and be prepared to deliver high quality instruction. I really want to be the best teacher in the best school of the district and provide all my students with many resources so they can have the best education they deserve.

  1. Hi Jesus great Vblog, I completely agree with your way of thinking. I also want to be the best teacher I can possibly be for my students. I want to see them succeed and follow their dreams. I like how you mentioned that it is our job to foster the new generation of students in this digital world. Everything is becoming a lot more technological and we are using computers for a lot more things now. Nowadays students are mainly working on computers in schools and even the STAAR test is online now. It is important that we as teachers adopt this new technology and find the best ways possible to help our students.
